Ontario rent receipt rules

Residential Tenancies Act, 2006, s. 109(1) requires a landlord to provide, free of charge and on request, a receipt for the payment of any rent, rent deposit, arrears of rent, or any other amount paid to the landlord.

A former tenant may request that receipt only within 12 months after the tenancy terminated. RTA s. 109(2).

Under O. Reg. 516/06, s. 9, a document is a receipt for s. 109 if it includes at least: the rental-unit address; the names of the tenants; the amount and date of each payment and what it was for; the landlord's name; and the signature of the landlord or a person they authorize.
